Enclosed auto transport services function like open carriers in the sense that they can transport your car from anywhere, to anywhere in the U.S., but that’s about the only thing they have in common. Enclosed carriers are typically more expensive than open ones and cater to a more select clientele – whereas open shippers tend to transport daily driving vehicles and the minivans that you use to take the kids to school and soccer practice, enclosed trailers tend to handle more expensive vehicles, like those that you show off to your buddies and keep under a special tarp when you aren’t driving it on a pristine day.
Enclosed carriers are important for this reason, though. There are a lot of cars out there that are rare, hard-to-find, exotic or classic, or just really, really nice, and you don’t want anything bad to even try to happen to those types of cars. Open carriers always run the risk of damage, no matter how rare it might be, and you don’t want even the slightest chance of something happening to your precious to occur. So you go with an enclosed transportation truck, because enclosed auto transport services are supposed to protect the vehicle, right?
They do, of course – protect the vehicle, we mean. And they do a great job, since your vehicle will be completely enclosed in a special trailer designed to prevent damage from occurring during transport. However, enclosed transportation does come with a higher cost – they’re not as common as open auto transport trucks and they haul fewer cars than an open trailer, on the whole (typically 2-4, though some can do more with a longer trailer). As such, you’re looking at an increase in price from anywhere from 35% to 50% over the cost of open transport.
Expenses aside, enclosed transportation is the method of choice if you’re transporting a vehicle that can’t afford to have any damage done to it. And like we mentioned, damage during transport – even open transport – is quite rare, and any damage that might occur will be repaired at the cost of the truck’s insurance company, so you won’t have to pay for anything out of pocket. But that won’t be a problem with an enclosed shipping company, so don’t even worry about it.
